How It Started
Starting your freelancing business can be challenging
When I first started my business, after managing clients and service delivery projects for 20 years, I knew I needed to hire someone to help me build my website.
So I went out to the internet and found someone who said they could do “all the things” I thought I needed. They quoted me a super-low price for the amount of work I thought they’d be doing, but hey, that’s their choice.
We had a free sales call, I described what I thought I needed (a logo, a website, an email, and an integrated CRM solution). They sent me back an email with the quoted amount, and I replied back that sounds great.
At this point, I started to notice that nothing was put in writing, they weren’t guiding me through the strategy or reviewing options with me, which did show up as a red flag, but I ignored it, thinking “they must know what they’re doing.”
Fast forward two weeks, we still had not aligned on the logo, and it was clear they had spent too much time on the logo and had exceeded the quoted budget amount. But since nothing was in writing, I couldn’t do much when they told me they couldn’t do the rest of the work.
And that’s when I started to ask around ...
